Types of Hearing Aids and Accessories
There are 4 common types of hearing aids:
Behind-the-Ear (BTE)
BTE aids rest behind the ear, in a plastic housing which contains all the components. The sound is funnelled through a clear plastic tube which is amplified into an earmold within the ear canal. This model can hold more circuitry, durability and amplify sound to a greater degree than the other types of hearing aids and a few are even waterproof. Although developed years ago, this model can be just as sophisticated as smaller hearing aids.
In-the-Ear (ITE)
ITE aids are a custom-formed ear piece which fits within the outer ear canal. Those with limited dexterity may find that it is easier to use because of its size and easy to use controls.
In-the-Canal (ITC)
ITC aids have an earmold that fits down into the ear canal with a smaller portion facing out into the outer ear. Although they are still visible within the outer ear, they are still discreet.
Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC)
CIC aids are barely visible, only if someone is peering into the ear. The only sign of their existence is a tiny plastic line which is used to insert or remove the aid. These aids are the newest technology in hearing aids and are popular for their aesthetic appeal. Some individuals may find this style unsuitable due to physiology (i.e. narrow ear canals).
